PUBLIC MEETING, THURSDAY, 7TH SEPTEMBER, FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE, MANCHESTER M2 5NS, 6.30 P.M.
Stockport United Against Austerity proudly supported the emergency demonstration at the Council’s Social Services offices at Stopford House on 11th April this year, in support of a family which had become homeless after whistle-blowing on the conditions in Home Office hotel accommodation in Stockport and alleged assault and maltreatment by the SERCO security guards.
The demonstration was called by the refugees’ and asylum seekers’ organisation RAPAR, whose website (http://www.rapar.co.uk/seeking-safety.html) documents the case in great detail, including this correspondence with the Leader of Stockport Council the response to which has revealed that the Council shares many of the profound concerns that have been articulated by this brave family.
SUAA considers that solidarity with the Shay family is of great importance because, not only have they shed light on the real conditions that prevail in asylum hotels, contrary to the lies told by racist and right wing politicians and organisations which suggest that these are taxpayer funded luxury accommodation but because the cruel and inhuman treatment of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees amounts to scapegoating by a Government which is attacking us all with its continuing austerity policies. As we say in our Statement of Aims, “We oppose all scapegoating, stigmatisation and racism and believe that all people should have a decent quality of life with access to the health care and social security they need; affordable housing; a living wage and legal justice. Together we will fight for a just society for everyone”.
We believe that solidarity is indivisible and an injury to one is an injury to all.
We are therefore supporting the public meeting of the Shay family campaign on 7th September to demonstrate such solidarity and to support the call for it to be spread.
